Where is Smart and Sustainable 2017 being held? 
The 12th annual Smart and Sustainable Campuses Conference will be held March 26-28, 2017, at the College Park Marriott Hotel & Conference Center. Venue address: 3501 University Blvd E, Hyattsville, MD 20783. 

Who attends Smart and Sustainable? 
Smart and Sustainable attracts professionals and students from all aspects of higher education, including: facilities and energy, campus planning, research, sales and marketing, design and construction, administration and business, safety and health, dining services, and sustainability. In the past five years, Smart and Sustainable has hosted attendees from more than 400 unique colleges, universities, non-profits and government departments. 

What is the cost to attend Smart and Sustainable?
The cost of attending Smart and Sustainable 2017 will vary based on whether you're a speaker, attendee, student, or University System of Maryland staff or faculty member, and which optional events (pre-conference workshops, tours, etc.) you choose to attend. When should I register?  
Registration will open on October 30, 2016. Early Bird Registration will remain open until February 12, 2017. Online registration will close on March 19, 2017, at 11:59PM EST. Registration will also be available on-site at the conference venue. Visit our registration page for more details. 

Do students get special registration rates? 
Yes. Special registration rates are available for full-time students. Visit our registration page for details.

Are any scholarships available for Smart and Sustainable? 
Yes. The University of Maryland is sponsoring a limited number of student scholarships to attend the conference. Please refer to our Student Scholarships page for more details. All scholarship applications must be received by November 1, 2016. 

Do you offer special discounts for hotels? 
Yes. College Park Marriott Hotel & Conference Center is our conference and lodging location for 2017. Room rates for conference attendees (single or double) are $154 per night plus state and local taxes. The conference rate is available for stays from Saturday, March 25 through Wednesday, March 29, 2017. To get the conference rate, you must make your reservation by March 6, 2017. How is Smart and Sustainable a “carbon neutral conference”? 
Thanks to a generous contribution from conference sponsor WGL Energy, the Smart and Sustainable Campuses Conference continues its long-standing tradition of carbon neutrality. Estimate greenhouse gas emissions from air travel, hotel stays, energy use, landfilled waste and paper use have been balanced to zero with Green-e Climate certified Carbon Offsets.

How can I submit a proposal to give a presentation at Smart and Sustainable? 
We welcome proposals linked to the following tracks: 
1. Renew, Restore, Regenerate 
2. Education for Sustainability: Innovating Curriculum and Research
3. The Built Environment
4. Change Management: Toward Transformation
5. Expanding the Sustainability Community

Sessions can be either 50 or 80 minutes in length allowing time for dialogue and shared learning. Proposals are also accepted for poster presentations. 

Proposals must be received by October 30, 2016 at 11:59PM PDT. Please refer to the Proposal Submission and Review Process Guide.

Can I change my proposal after it has been submitted? 
The submission system will remain open and accessible until January 9, 2017 at 11:59PM PDT. You may make edits until that time. 

How long will it take me to find out whether my proposal has been accepted? 
All proposals will be reviewed by the SSCC Program Committee and volunteers with expertise in each session track, and all notifications will be made no later than December 1, 2016. 

Can I request the date or time of my session in advance of the conference?
Yes. Please let us know as soon as possible if you would like to request a particular date and time for your session, and we will make every effort to accommodate that request. 

When will the conference program be available? 
The first draft of the conference program will be available online approximately two months prior to the conference. If your proposal was accepted, you will be notified separately of your presentation date and time.

What comes with my booth? 
The standard exhibit booth package includes the following: 

  • 1 exhibit space, including backdrop, side-rail dividers, a skirted table, two chairs, and a exhibitor identification sign 
  • 2 conference registrations
  • Additional conference registrations discounted $100
  • Promotional Tweet from @SmartandSustainable (950+ followers) several weeks before conference
  • Attendee list 4 weeks in advance
  • Organization’s name, website, phone number, and booth location listed in conference program
